FOSCON
I had somethings written up (oh and it was glorious too) and my battery shifted again and my power laptop lost power for the fifth time this week. Ouch. If you have a TiBook that needs a new battery, perhaps it is best to avoid NewerTech batteries (the capacity boost is great though…darn).

Anyway, it was quite an evening. DHH started things off and gave a preview of his keynote tomorrow. It was the usual Rails talk, but it’s neat to hear it in person. At the end the Q&A was lively; I wonder if there will be buzz about it tomorrow. Rails has been a kind of low rumbling throughout the con. It’s weird to hear some of the comments people are making, like when you hear people talking about your best friend or your parents when they think you’re not listening. Oh, right…back to the talk. DHH mentioned new features for deployment (SwitchTower) and for maintaining FastCGI processes (Reaper to kill, Spawner to start and Spinner to keeping ‘em running).
ActionStep will bring Flash to new places…Rich Kilmer talked about his project to do OpenStep in Flash and to be integrated with Rails. I’ll admit that I spaced a bit here, and it was really only a sneak peek, but it sounds neat. Definitely something that ITP will be curious about when it gets off the ground.
Metaprogramming in Ruby is so neat, but there’s not a whole lot of resources on it out there. Glenn Vanderburg ran through his OSCON talk on metaprogramming. I’m ready to run out and…well at least think about trying it out someday really soon now. It definitely is cool and used heavily in Rails, which is a great example of it.
The rest of the night was left to why the lucky stiff, Din and Trudy aka “The Thirsty Cups.” Oh, that was great fun. I recorded most of it, and I’ll have to splice it together and encode it later. Let me just say that it was splendid. Good times. For those of you who missed it, there is an encore at OSCON tomorrow.
Oh, I was so social today. It almost makes up for hardly speaking this whole time. So, if you see me tomorrow I promised not to be slouched in a corner, at least not a darkened one.
